Here’s my View from the Kiosk for Saturday the 1st of December
Sorry for the gap in A View from the Kiosk. Today was a really nice day in the kiosk. The sun was shining, and it wasn’t terribly cold. It was a challenge to get to the kiosk as there were three tour groups in Strawberry Fields. Such a gross part of the park, tourists baffle me. Very brisk traffic at the kiosk though. Best part of the shift? Instead of my usual replacement at 1pm, the next volunteer was Gillian. Gillian is my FAVORITE Central Park volunteer. Just seeing her arrive at 2 minutes to 1 brought a huge smile to my face. Today, I did analysis on visitors based on outfit. I challenged myself to identify my visitors’ countries of origin based on their fashion sense ( or lack of). My findings:
Jack Wolfskin jacket? 100% from Germany
Canada Goose? 100% from NYC, most likely still supported by parents
Oddly fitting down? 100% from Russia or Eastern Europe
Fitted wool or sweater? Most likely from the UK
Fitted and just hot looking? Italian or French
Baseball cap and oversized team logo sweatshirt draped on an oversized frame? Take a guess
#1 Best Question? “May I interview you for my high school journalism class?” FINALLY! I will get my 15 minutes of fame. Unfortunately, it will be in some school paper in the middle of Queens.
#1 Best Interaction? Two ladies from Minnesota. They make it known almost immediately that they were also volunteers, but they were volunteer beer pourers at the largest brewery in Minnesota. They posed for a picture with me because they like to photograph all the people they meet on vacation.
#2 Best Interaction? A blowfart type walked up with swagger and in front of his family said, “okay my man, my family wants a map, but I need to know how much you are going to sell it to me for?” It was clear that he was posturing in front of his family that he would be able to negotiate a good price on the map. When I told him that the map was free and then asked how many he would like, he got the saddest expression on his face. I guess I stole his posturing.
#1 Most Annoying? Six Israelis standing next to my kiosk arguing loudly for 15 minutes in Hebrew debating if they should be to Abercrombie and Fitch or Banana Republic. Anyone who knows Hebrew can probably hear what this argument sounded like.
Visitors? I had no visitors………
#1 most asked question other than “where is Strawberry Fields?’ “Where is the duck?”
Most Popular Language? Mostly French today
150 maps in 2 hours
